Lesson plan – Physics

Topic: Thermodynamics - Heat transfer.

Time: 45 minutes

Lesson objectives:

1.      Students know the basic terms and meanings (e.g. heat, temperature, conduction, convection, radiation).

2.      Students explain how heat transfers.

1. Students describe how heat transfers occur by conduction, convection, and radiation.
2. Students give examples of heat transfers that occur in everyday situations.

Individual work, pair work, experiments,

Materials:

Worksheets, quizlet exercises, kahoot quiz, items necessary for experiments:

1.      Temperature test: non-contact thermometer, 1 book, 1 cola can

2.      Ice melting: for each pair of students: 4 ice cubes, 1 black plastic lid, 1 black metal lid, 1 white plastic lid, 1 white metal lid

3.      Heat sensation: 3 bowls of water: tap/regular water, hot water, cold water.

4.      Popping balloons: 2 balloons, 2 candles, water

Procedures:

1.      Introduction:

a.       Introducing the topic.

b.      Brain storming: What is temperature? What is heat?

c.       Questions to answer after the lesson: Why do you feel colder when you get into the sea? What makes something warmer or colder?

2.      Development and practice:

a.       Introducing basic terms – using PowerPoint presentation

b.      Experiment no 1: temperature test

i.      One students touches a book and a can and describes the temperature – which is colder? What will happen to the temperature of these objects if we leave them for the whole day on the beach?

ii.      Measuring the temperature and explaining the idea of conduction using the example of  a freshly baked cake and a roaster (same temperature, various time of conduction)

iii.      Students fill in the text in a worksheet about the experiment – fill in the gap task.

c.       Experiment no 3: heat sensation

d.      Experiment no 4: popping balloons

i.      Teacher balloons over the candles – one balloon is filled with air, the second one with water.

ii.      Students observe the experiment and tries to explain why the balloon with water does not pop.

iii.      Teacher summarises the experiment and students fill in the worksheets.

e.       Experiment no 5: melting ice cubes

i.      Students do experiment in pairs and make notes on the observation worksheet

ii.      Teacher summarises experiment.

f.        Experiment no 6: idea of radiation, convection and conduction

i.      Teacher uses a candle and a metal stick to explain the terms.

3.      Checking for understanding:

a.       Quizlet exercise – matching term with its definition

b.      Kahoot quiz – choosing the correct answer about heat transfer in everyday life.

c.       Teacher asks students for everyday examples of heat transfer

4.      Closure:

a.       Teacher asks students to write on papers what they have learnt during the lesson and then collects the papers for evaluation

b.      Teacher summarises the lesson, revises the basic idea.

c.       Teacher asks students for the answers posed at the beginning of the lesson.

Topic: Vibrations and waves – summary.

Time: 45 minutes

Lesson objectives:

1.      Students know the basic terms connected with vibrations and waves and uses them while calculating the differences between them.

2.      Students know the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves.

3.      Students know and use the terms of infrasound and ultrasound.

4.      Students can describe magnetic and acoustic resonance.

Methods:

Discussion, interactive exercises, individual work

Materials:

Worksheets, learning apps exercises, mobiles with the access the Internet and QR code reader

Procedures:

1.      Introduction:

a.       Introducing the topic.

Lesson plan – Mathematics

Topic: Pythagorean Theorem.

Time: 45 minutes

Lesson objectives:

• Discover the Pythagorean Theorem with the aid of a computer acitivity
• Explore methods of proving the Pythagorean Theorem
• Introduce the Pythagorean Theorem as a method of solving right triangle problems
• Find the length of the third side of a right triangle, given the other two sides

Methods:

Classes with the usage of computers (Computer lab is suggested)

Individual work, pair work, using ICT tools, problem-solving

Materials:

Worksheets,  Paint programme, kahoot quiz,

Procedures:

1.      Introduction:

a.       Stating the problem: how to choose the right size of a computer screen – we can do it properly thanks to a Greek mathematician – Pythagoras.

b.      Introduction of Pythagoras – short PowerPoint Presentation about Pythagoras

2.      Development and practice:

a.       Introduction of Pythagorean theorem – using animation to present it

b.      Students prepare their own proofs for Pythagorean theorem using Paint programme – they work with the file prepared by teacher earlier and fill in the tasks on the worksheet. They follow the teachers instructions to get the proof.

c.       Brain storming: how can we apply this theorem in everyday life?

d.      Group work: students working in groups get one of the tasks to solve

·         Radio station WUOG in Athens has a broadcast range of 70 miles. The radio station is 40 miles east from Commerce. Commerce is 60 miles north of Atlanta. Determine if Atlanta is within WUOG's broadcast range. (Draw a picture, formulate an equation, solve the equation, and determine an answer.)

·         As a city planner, you are designing parking for a downtown area. You are considering the two designs shown. In each design, the distance between the lines is 8 feet. Which design allows more cars to be parked along a 200-foot block? Explain.

·         Mary wants to get a computer monitor for her desk which can hold a 22 inch monitor. She has found a monitor 16 inches wide and 10 inches high. Will the computer fit into Mary’s cabin?

·         You need to paint the walls in your room which is 3 meters hight – how tall should be the ladder?
